Doña Herlinda and Her Son (Doña Herlinda y su Hijo)
Year:
1985
Country:
Mexico
Director:
Jaime Humberto Hermosillo
Starring:
Guadalupe del Toro, Marco Antonio Trevino, Arturo Meza
Synopsis:
A doting mother helps her doctor son search for the perfect wife, and even suggests that his close male friend move into the bedroom of her son.
Quick review:
Doña Herlinda is one of the sweetest women you've ever met, who is either very naive or incredibly accepting -- and it takes you a while to figure out which. Her son, Rodolfo is a successful doctor and seems to have everything he needs in life but romance. So, mother continues to fix him up with available young women. The one complication is Rodolfo's very, very close friend Ramon, a music student. What's a mother to do? Why, invite Ramon along to these romantic liaisons as she continues to search for the perfect wife for her son. Of course Ramon and Rodolfo are more than just friends. The movie balances Rodolfo's desires for pleasing his mother and maintaining a closeted life, one that includes a wife and children, and his desire to be with Ramon. And he can always count on his mother to help. My biggest problem with this film is the Ramon character. It seems his parents know he's gay and he has no reason to remain hiding in the closet. So why does he put up with Rodolfo's games? He's a gorgeous young man who could easily find love elsewhere, and yet he puts up with a lot to stay with Rodolfo. What I liked best was the sypathetic portrayal of gay love in a 1985 movie. In that regard, it's way ahead of its time.
