Mandragora

Year: 1997
Country: CzechRepublic
Director: Wiktor Grodecki
Starring: Mirek Caslavka, Pavel Skripal, David Svec, Miroslav Breu
Synopsis: A 15-year-old boy gets sick of his home life and decides to run away to Prague, where he soon begins to work as a male hustler. His life of sex and drugs has some highs, but mostly lows.
Quick review: Take every cliche about a gay hustler movie you know, throw in some cute Czech boys, stir and you get this Eastern European film. I spent half of it just shaking my head and saying 'You stupid fool.' Marek is 15 and hates school. He thinks his dad is way too tough on him. No one understands him. Did I mention he's 15? So what else is there to do but run away from home and head for the big city, in this case Prague. Seconds after he gets off the train he sees other runaway boys and their pimp, working the train station. In a few hours he'll be out of money and ready to join them. That starts his life of selling his body, stealing and taking drugs. Anyone who expects a happy ending hasn't seen enough of these films. It's not preachy, but you had the feeling watching it that they were trying to convince all those other restless 15-year-olds to stay in school and with their families. The ending is a nice touch, but getting there takes some patience.
