I Will Survive (Sobreviviré)

Year: 1999
Country: Spain
Director: David Menkes and Alfonso Albacete
Starring: Emma Suárez, Juan Diego Botto, Mirta Ibarra, Rosana Pastor, Manuel Manquiña and Alex Brendemühl
Synopsis: A Spanish woman learns that to survive in this world you have to be willing to accept challenges and learn to overcome them, including falling in love with a gay man.
Quick review: This is a tough little movie, much like the lead character in it, Marga. She leaves home at an early age to make her own way in life, eventually finds a good job and then falls in love with the man of her dreams. But life rarely allows the happy ending. Her boyfriend dies in a car accident, but only after getting Marga pregnant. And, to make life even more interesting, her best friend has just arranged for her to get fired from her job. So, she's alone, pregnant and broke. It's a movie about survival, and Marga goes to work putting the pieces back together. It is while she is doing that when Iagui enters her life. They become friends with a hint of more to follow, which is remarkable considering Iagui is a gay man. He's never been with a woman. Still, his relationship with Marga is so strong, he's willing to give it a try. This movie focuses on how sexual orientation is not written in stone like some believe, at least not for everyone, and how two souls can touch each other. But, dating a gay man will have its own set of challenges. And life rarely allows the happy ending. So the odds are stacked against these two. I didn't mind the bisexual content as much as you might think a gay man would. It works in this film, and that's not an easy thing to pull off.
