Stage Beauty

Year: 2004
Country: UK
Director: Jeffrey Hatcher
Starring: Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, Tom Wilkinson, Ben Chaplin, Rupert Everett, Hugh Bonneville and Edward Fox
Synopsis: Consider for a moment that you are the top actor of your generation and recognized by royalty and common folk alike as one of the best ever. The problem is you're a man playing a woman on the eve of a major cultural shift.
Quick review: People flock to the theaters in mid-1600s in London to see Ned Kynaston portray a woman. Many believe no man has ever played a woman's role as well. There's just one problem for Ned: He stands at the moment in history when everything is about to change. Women are about to play the roles of women, meaning he will soon be out of work. Crudup is exceptional in his portrayal of the bisexual Ned. As Ned fights for his right to play a woman he embarks on his own trail of self-discovery, one that leads to him making another monumental shift in the history of theater. Crudup's performance alone is worth checking out this period drama.
