Synopsis: A housewife finds herself attracted to her new professor in this John Sayles classic. This was one of the first films to deal with lesbian romance in an honest, and positive manner.
Quick review: Lianna gave up any thoughts of having a career when she married one of her college teachers. Years into their relationship and after giving birth to two children, Lianna discovers her husband still enjoys sex with his students and that she has never really been in love with anyone. Enter Ruth, her new professor. She is captivated by the older woman and slowly takes steps toward a romantic relationship. If you try to think of another film from this era that dealt with lesbian love in such a thoughtful and honest manner you would likely be stumped. The only other U.S. film of that time was Personal Best. This film shows the tenderness of two women making love and the passion awakened in Lianna. It also deals with lesbian issues of faithfulness and living your life openly. And society's condemnation and discrimination. It's a landmark film in how it presented a lesbian relationship to the public. Throw in the fact that it's an early work by a legendary Hollywood director and it's a must see for any fan of lesbian films.
