It's in the Water

Year: 1996
Country: USA
Director: Kelli Herd
Starring: Keri Jo Chapman, Teresa Garrett, Derrick Sanders and Nancy Chartier
Synopsis: The residents of Azalea Springs, Texas become afraid there is something in the water that is making them turn gay after a few people in this small town show an interest in someone of the same sex.
Quick review: Based on the premise, you can tell this movie is going to enjoy itself as it pokes fun at homophobic straight people. And it does to that. Alex discovers she has a crush on her childhood friend Grace, who has recently moved back to won after a divorce. As they get to know each other, Grave eventually reveals that she's a lesbian and that is what ended her marriage. Alex takes a job at the AIDS hospice where Grace works just to spend more time with her as the town folk begin their rumors. While this film is mostly lesbian, it does have a gay subplot of a group of ex-gay men who meet nightly to discuss their heterosexuality. The movie gets silly at points and is very predictable, but it's almost impossible not to enjoy a movie that spends so much time and effort to make fun of homophobes.
