Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant (Bitteren Tränen der Petra von Kant, Die)
Year:
1972
Country:
Germany
Director:
Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Starring:
Margit Carstensen, Hanna Schygulla, Irm Hermann and Katrin Schaake
Synopsis:
Petra is a success fashion designer who has no problem using love as a tool toward getting what she wants. That is, until the tables are turned and she's the pawn in someone else's game of love.
Quick review:
This is the second film I've seen by legendary German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder. The first was Querelle, also in this database. This film is much slower and where Querelle had its charms, this one disappointed. Petra is a mean-hearted liar. Her maid, Marlene, is in love with her mistress, a relationship Petra abuses. Enter Karin, who begins a relationship with Petra but doesn't seem to have her heart into it. She gets what we want, and we get to see the user being used and the bitter tears that follow.
