Maurice

Year: 1987
Country: UK
Director: James Ivory
Starring: James Wilby, Hugh Grant, Rupert Graves and Denholm Elliott.
Synopsis: Two English boarding school friends return home where one of them decides to give up their sexual relationship to take his place in society.
Quick review: Based on an E.M. Forster's story, this film has some touching moments as we experience Maurice's pain at the breakup with Clive and the high price of fitting in with what society demands. During their days as public school boys in Victorian England Clive and Maurice did what many boys do, they fooled around together. For Maurice, it was more than just physical gratification. But once school ends society begins to demand that the two men conform to the expectations forced on them by their status in life. For Clive, that means taking a wife, something Maurice has difficulty accepting. However, Maurice learns there are other men who can give him the love he needs and if he's going to ignore society's demands, he might as well go all out by becoming involved with a man from a lower social class. The acting and story are first rate, as is the production. This is one of the classic gay films that belongs in every home library.
