Bad Education (La Mala educación)
Year:
2004
Country:
Spain
Director:
Pedro Almodovar
Starring:
Gael Garcia Bernal, Fele Martinez, Javier Camara, Daniel Gimenez-Cacho and Lluis Homar.
Synopsis:
A young filmmaker is struggling for his next film project until a close friend from his Catholic school days shows up unannounced.
Quick review:
This is an original masterpiece showing Almodovar at his best. It goes in unexpected directions and proves Garcia Bernal's range as an actor. It is rare to find a movie that breaks out of the cookie-cutter mold so treasure this one. The endless surprises will delight you. Enrique is a successful gay director in Spain looking for his next project. A knock on the door brings him a surprise from his past. A young man shows up claiming to be Ignacio, Enrique's close friend from their days at a Catholic school. In fact, Ignacio was the first boy Enrique ever fell for, until the priests conspired to keep them apart. Ignacio has a screenplay about those days and his fantasy of what might have happened after. It captivates the director, but there's something amiss and he's not sure exactly what it is. Perhaps confronting the pedophile priest who kept him away from Ignacio all those years ago might provide the answer. This movie keeps you guessing and never lets you get comfortable. It's an excellent viewing experience.
